Fall Activities To Do in Hilliard, Ohio

Little girl carving pumpkin at Halloween

Little girl carving pumpkin at Halloween

With the brilliance of October skies and turning leaves, most of us are eager to get out and enjoy the bounty of Fall events and festivals. Staying in and inviting friends over may be our most frequent choice, but there are times when exploring the wider world is more appealing. There is plenty to enjoy in and around Hilliard, Ohio, during this beautiful season.

Locally, our couple dozen parks are at their best this time of year and are perfect outings for family fun, whether it’s heart-pumping hikes or bike rides you enjoy or the tranquility of dipping a line in the water and waiting for a fish to bite. As a special Fall treat, you might enjoy exploring a new park or one you don’t visit often.

You can take your best pal — the four-legged, furry one — to Heritage Trail Dog Park for an off-leash romp and the opportunity to socialize with its own kind. The park has separate areas for dogs of different sizes. The splashpad of the park closes for the season Oct. 31.

Whether you travel alone or with friends and family, there’s a fall festival for you. Some of our recommended events are planned by the Hilliard, Ohio, Chamber of Commerce. A regional celebration of October’s best-known fruit will require a 30-minute drive.

If the 50s (the 1950s, that is) was your decade or you wish it had been, “Cruise In at the Alley” will crank up the nostalgia. Vintage cars, bowling and music of the era are on the program at Tin Pin Alley Oct. 17. This is a benefit for the Special Olympics.

An especially fitting festival for the season is just a 30-minute drive. The Circleville Pumpkin Show has carved out a full schedule from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to the final event at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. There will be music of many beats, parades of babies, pets and beauty queens along with vendors peddling anything they think will sell. Dishes made of the succulent orange orb will be available along with traditional festival fare. You can find the full schedule at

Then, on Oct. 29, back in Hilliard, the Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Trick or Treat as a family fun event.

Of course, the best times of all may be after the events and between jaunts as you relax and rest in the serenity of your own outdoor-living space. We hope it is. If you have not yet created an oasis at home, why not call us? We’ll be happy to discuss possibilities.

Summer Landscaping Tips For Columbus, Ohio Homeowners

wheelbarrowSummer Landscaping Tips For Columbus, Ohio Homeowners – Beautiful landscaping can instantly transform the look of your property. The right elements can take a home from average to outstanding, but it does some require some effort and planning. Here are some helpful summer landscaping tips to have your property looking its very best this year.

Maintain a Well-Manicured Lawn. The grass on your lawn can really impact the overall look of your property. Make sure to mow it on a regular schedule, taking care to trim along walkways and patios. An overgrown lawn looks unkempt and neglected, so don’t let it get too long before you turn on the mower. Apply a weed repellent early in the season to prevent weed growth.

Fill in the Gaps. Take note of any areas of your lawn where it looks like something is missing. Fill in those spots with shrubs, flowers, or even decorative features. You want your lawn to have a balanced look, so step back and really assess it as a whole. If you see any bald patches in the grass, add fresh soil and throw down seed to fill in.

Add Pops of Color. In both the back and the front yard, you will want to add some color to liven it up. Choose flowers that will suit your needs. For example, if you don’t want to spend much time watering, select flowers that can thrive in the heat without daily watering. Be sure to read the info for each plant so that you can place it in the right area. Some plants require more sun, while others need more shade. If you have a patio area or a deck, use colorful pots and planters for flowers and greenery.

Keep Walkways and Water Features in Good Shape. Concrete walkways and paths can take a beating during the cold winter months. Repair any cracks to prevent further damage. If you have water features, like fountains, ponds, or even bird baths, make sure that they are clean and in good condition. Debris can build up, so keep them cleared out to allow water to flow freely.

With a little planning and preparation, you can prepare your lawn for summer landscaping. Once you get the grass, plant life, and garden features in place, you’ll have a beautiful space to enjoy all summer long.

Landscaping Design: The CAD Software Revolution

The technological revolution has taken the business world by storm, and the landscaping design industry has been drastically impacted by the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. This software allows plans to be drafted, edited, and redrawn on a computer, rather than by hand. While some designers enjoy the hand-drawn aspect of traditional design, it’s undeniable that CAD software offers many advantages.

For instance, the editing process is vastly easier. Plans can be altered with the click of a mouse or with a few keystrokes. If a client wants even a minor change – rerouting a garden path, for example – designers previously had to scrub the old design and draw a new one to showcase the alterations. Now, those changes can be made in seconds. This means that plans are more accurate and more likely to produce the perfect design the customer truly wants. These plans can also be created at record speeds, saving time and helping the job proceed on schedule.

At Hidden Creek Landscaping, CAD software is used extensively to produce plans that bring each customer’s desires and visions to life. These plans are the first step toward a beautiful outdoor renovation.  Contact us today to start planning your outdoor transformation.

Installing Green Roofs In Columbus Ohio

Green roofs are becoming an increasingly popular, and attractive, option for businesses throughout the country.  A green roof is just what it sounds like, it’s a vegetative layer on a rooftop.   Through the process of evapotranspiration, green roofs remove heat from the air.  Considering how hot roofs can get, a green roof can actually be cooler than the air temperature!  Since green roofs remove heat and act as insulators for buildings, you can expect a decrease in heating and cooling expenses.  Aside from lowering energy use, green roofs also are a benefit to the environment  by removing air pollutants, and reduce storm water runoff.

There are a variety of types of green roofs that are being installed across the country.  Some are simply a small layer of vegetation, and others are full gardens and even usable parks.  Green roofs are commonly installed on both commercial and residential buildings.  Hidden Creek Landscaping specializes in green roofs for commercial buildings as part of our commercial services.  Please contact us to learn more about green roofs and out other commercial services.
